Spotlight: Paul Moon Design

By: Tiffany Seeger
Posted In: Design Log

In our ongoing Designer Spotlight Series, we talk with interior designers and architects to see what inspires them, and get insights to how they approach creating beautiful spaces. In this Spotlight we talk with Paul Moon and learn about his process and experiences as a designer.

Stikwood: How long have you been in business as an interior designer?

Paul: I started in 2001.

Stikwood: Tell us a bit about your business and experience:

Paul: I graduated from University of Washington in 1994. Immediately went to work for a residential architect—hand drafting. Moved to a larger multi-family firm in Seattle for a few years and then left the business completely to start a Dot-Com. Once that failed I started Paul Moon Design. The goal was to do residential design—where we do the architecture, interior design, and landscape design. Integrating the structure, interiors, and outdoor spaces.

Stikwood: We love how incorporate personality into the rooms you design. Can you tell us a little bit about how Stikwood has helped you with that?

Paul: Each one of our houses is a custom for a specific location and client. As we get to know the client we try and incorporate some of their personality and uniqueness into each house. Stikwood has allowed us to be playful by adding some unexpected design and texture to some of our interior spaces.

Stikwood: What would you say is your “signature style”?

Paul: Some people hire Designers because they are attracted to a certain style. You can tell that building was done by a specific Designer. We are the opposite—it is the specific site and Owners wishes that determine the style. We are comfortable in both traditional and contemporary detailing—we enjoy the diversity.

Stikwood: What was your favorite project using Stikwood products? What made it so special?

Paul: We did a contemporary in Yarrow Point, WA that was completed in 2014. We used Stikwood on the Living Room fireplace and in the Powder Room. It was during a time when salvaged wood was just becoming popular and available. We found Stikwood on the Internet and loved the palette and ease of installation.

Stikwood: What is your best piece of advice to offer someone who wants to redecorate a room on their own?

Paul: Have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Creativity is bred by saying “yes”, instead of “no”. Take your time to look at photos, understand costs, and create a strong theme that is carried down to the smallest details. Then sit back and be proud of yourself!

Stikwood: Where can people go to find out more about your services?

Paul: Our instagram @paulmoondesign shows both current and past projects. I hope it is where you can see a bit of our personality. We have many projects that we are in the process of photographing and we will have a new Web Site out soon.
